UPDATED 7/20/10: Message from Mike Chaney, Secretary, Wildcat H.O.G.

DINNER RIDE RESCHEDULED to July 27: The next Wildcat HOG chapter dinner ride will be next Tuesday, July 27th to the Rock Fire Steak House in Mt. Vernon at exit #62 on I-75. The restaurant is across the road from Denny's and sits up on the hill on the west side of the interstate. Ride will depart from Wildcat HD and kick stands will go up at 6:30 PM. The ride will take US Hwy 25 north from London up to Mt. Vernon. For those of you living north or west of Mt. Vernon, please try to ride down or over and meet the group at the restaurant. We are trying to mix up the days of the week for dinner rides, and we plan on doing weekend dinner rides as well so that Chapter members will have a greater opportunity to take part. We are also looking at having several Road Captains available on some weekends to lead different types of rides - some short, some long, some to dinner, Saturday versus Sunday, etc. - to again give you a greater choice of rides. Stay tuned for more. Many thanks to those Chapter members who volunteered to work at Wildcat HD's 1st Annual Birthday Bash this past weekend, you helped to raise money for the chapter as well as to support the dealership in making the day and evening a truly great success.

6/30/2010

Hey everyone,

I hope your summer is off to a great start and you are getting a lot of ride time now that the heat and humidity is starting to ease up. For those of you who didn't get to ride with the chapter this past Saturday, you missed a good trip. Over 25 bikes rolled out of Wildcat HD at about 10:30 or so, and headed down Ky Hwy 229 toward Barbourville and then took US Hwy 25E on to Middlesboro where we stopped to regroup. During that leg, we picked up a few chapter members along the way and at the stop I counted 38 chapter members and 28 bikes. We rolled on into Cumberland Gap, TN to take in the 1st Annual Moonshine Trail Festival and to enjoy the festivities. Live music, a great lunch at Webb's Country Kitchen, various vendors and displays, and even camel rides for the adventurous were just part of the activities. We hooked up with other HOG members, some of whom were from the Dragon Chapter at Smoky Mountain H-D, and had a very good time in spite of the heat and sticky humidity. Most of the Wildcat members rode back home in the early afternoon, a few rode on to Maryville with the Dragon Chapter. Several of us decided to strike out as a group and take a more leisurely route to Maryville, going east on US 25E to Bean Station and then turning back east toward Rutledge. Just before getting on I-40 West at Exit 412, our Chapter director, Steve "Big Pig" Patton, discovered that his bike would not start, not even click the starter. So there we were, on the side of the road on a hot, muggy, late Saturday afternoon, with a broken down bike. Not to worry, though. A couple of phone calls were made and soon a rescue truck and trailer were on the way from Smoky Mountain H-D. After the bike was loaded the rest of us followed the truck to Maryville, where we stopped at the Luxbury Inn hotel while the bike was taken on over to the dealership. As it was late in the day, the dealership sent a courtesy vehicle over to pick us all up and take us over to The Shed, where we enjoyed some great BBQ and listened to the eclectic music of The Hackensaw Boys. I can't define their style of music, but it certainly has a way of "getting down around your feet." After the show and activites were over, the courtesy truck took us all back to the hotel. The next morning, to get to the dealership Debbie hitched a ride behind one of our lone riders while "Big Pig" was treated to a ride in the sidecar attached to Ol' Black Betty. Apparently that was a first for him; there may be a picture floating about that shows his excitement at this new adventure. One of the service guys at Smoky Mountain had come in early to start work on Steve's bike to get him and Debbie back on the road. Turns out the problem was a bad ignition switch, and it was also discovered that the switch for that year and model of bike was under a still-active 12-yr-old factory recall. The bottom line is that in two hours Steve and Deb were back on the road, and the dealership did not charge them one penny for coming to pick up the bike, nor for making the repairs. This is a testimony to the commitment of Smoky Mountain H-D family of dealerships to go the extra distance to provide excellent service and customer satisfaction. Scott Maddux should be proud of his team there (as well as at Wildcat).

Other notable items:

Every Saturday night during August, there will be notable music acts at The Shed in Maryville, TN: go online to check it out. Leon Russell and the Kentucky Headhunters will be there labor day weekend.

Our next dinner ride will be sometime during the third week of August (we are checking on an entertainment package at one site), I will let you know as soon as a decision is made. And - we will soon be starting Sunday afternoon "mystery rides" as a fun way to spend a few hours in the saddle. There will be a set time limit on these (probably two or three hours) and you won't know where the ride is going until you get on the road, or maybe when you get there!! More to follow...

Activites Director Bill Dowd has suggested a mid-October picnic for the HOG chapter, something that is family friendly and casual. We will develop a plan and keep you posted of progress.

The Anthony Project (TAP) fundraiser and fun event will be held at Wildcat HD on Aug. 14th, more info will be coming as soon as we get the details hammered out. There will be games for all bikers, both on and off the bikes, as well as food and a charity ride. Please block out this day on you calendar and try to participate. More details will be provided as time draws near.

Looking ahead, the officers have decided to hold a charity ride/fun event to raise funds for the TAP Foundation to help a local family make their house handicap accessible for a family member; more information to follow. This event is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 14th.

Other items of interest:
If you have not yet picked up your Charter pins & patch, you can see me at Wildcat H-D on weekends and I can accommodate you. For those of you from way out of town, we'll work something out to get your stuff to you.
